Began playing tennis at age five with his father, Tim, who is manager of Rochester Tennis Connection, a club in Rochester, Minn. Has one younger brother Jeff (born July 23, 1984) who played two years at St. John's Univ. in Minnesota...Mother, Jan, also manages at the club...Played collegiately at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn., a Division III school, from 2001-03, capturing NCAA singles and doubles titles (w/Kevin Whipple) in '03...Earned All-American honors in singles and doubles three seasons...Played one season at Ball State in 2000 before transferring to Gustavus Adolphus...After finishing school, lived in Evreux, France, for one year and played in club level tennis and gained his first ATP Ranking on Oct. 6, 2003 after winning French Futures doubles title in Plaisir...A huge Minnesota pro sports fan, following Twins (baseball), Timberwolves (NBA) and Vikings (NFL)...Considers serve as strength and favorite surfaces are indoor hard courts and grass...Married on Sept. 17, 2011 to Maggie Suydam in Newport, Rhode Island.
2013 -- Partnered Hanley to Brisbane final (l. to Melo-Robredo)…On 5 May, as a first-time pairing with Baghdatis, reached the Munich doubles final (l. to Nieminen-Tursunov)…Dropped to 13-8 in team finals; was also runner-up in 2010 Munich final (w/Kohlmann)…With Nielsen, reached Winston-Salem SFs (l. to Nestor-Paes)…On 29 September, won first ATP World Tour title with Klaasen and improved to 14-8 lifetime in title matches (has won at least one title in every season since 2007) with victory over Cuevas-Zeballos…
2011 -- The Minnesota native teamed with Rojer to capture 3 ATP World Tour titles and reach another final, compiling a 42-26 match record while finishing No. 9 in ATP Doubles Team Rankings…Served as alternates for Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London...Jumped off to 12-6 start in 1st 2 months with final in Memphis (l. to Mirnyi-Nestor) and 3 SF, in Auckland, Australian Open and Delray Beach...On May 1, captured clay court title in Estoril (d. M. Lopez-Marrero) and 3 weeks later, added another title in Nice (d. S. Gonzalez-Marrero)...Struggled in next 8 tournaments with 6-8 mark and did not win back-to-back matches again until Asian circuit in fall…On Oct. 2, earned 3rd title of season in Kuala Lumpur (d. 2010 -- In tandom with R. Ram, the duo reached the Australian Open QFs (l. to Bryans)…The following month they reached back-to-back SFs in Johannesburg (l. to Bopanna-Qureshi) and San Jose (l. to Fish-Querrey)...Butorac won only three matches in his next seven tournaments before teaming with Kohlmann to reach the Munich final (l. to Marach-Ventura)...He reached his second final of the season three-and-a-half months later in Los Angeles, where he teamed with Rojer to finish runners-up to the Bryans…The duo reunited at the US Open in a first-round loss, but bounced back strongly in the Asian swing, winning their first team title in Tokyo with a 63 62 victory over Seppi-Tursunov…Two weeks later they won their second ATP World Tour doubles title in Stockholm, defeating Brunstrom-Nieminen 63 64…
