Following his All-America career at UCLA, he turned pro in 1977... Member of the US Davis Cup team, 1981-83, 1985... Played his last Davis Cup match in 1985 vs. West Germany and defeated Hans Schwaier before losing to Boris Becker in Hamburg... Ranked among the top 15 from 1980 to 1984 and it was only due to injury that caused his ranking to drop from 9 to 24 in 1985.
By late summer of '85 the pain from recurring nerve problems in his serving arm became unbearable and he decided to forgo the US Open... His ATP ranking dropped to 53 in 1986 but he came back strong by finishing 1987 by reaching the finals in his last two events (runner-up Scottsdale, won Hong Kong) and ending at No... 20... Earned a career-high $267,630 in 1981... Following stints as men's tennis coach at Pepperdine University and as personal coach for Pete Sampras and Taylor Dent, named Director of High Performance for the USTA in 2003.
