Mecir began playing tennis at age 6 or 7 and learned from his father, who was a club player... He is described as a difficult opponent because both his speed and his shot-making are deceptive and difficult to anticipate... His nickname is "Gattone," which means "big cat" in Italian, because of the way he moves on court.
He made his move on the circuit in 1985, reaching the final of Philadelphia when he was No. 60 on the ATP computer... He was a finalist in four events in the first five months of 1985, winning Rotterdam and Hamburg while finishing runner-up at Philadelphia and Rome... Member of the Czech Davis Cup team since 1984 and Czech National Champion in 1983... Mecir was off the circuit from October 1985 through March 1986 due to two surgeries on his left knee. He qualified for his first Nabisco Masters in 1987, losing all three of his matches in round robin play, but he won the doubles title with Smid... He led Czechoslovakia to the World Team Cup title in 1987 over the U.S. by winning three of his four singles matches... Became the first player since John McEnroe in 1984 to win a NGP event on each of the four different surfaces... Mecir finished with a career-high 74 wins (in 94 matches) and $1,205,326 in 1987... Prior to 1987 his career earnings were $680,271.
The gold medalist in the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games (d. Mayotte) and bronze medalist in doubles (w/Srejber)... In 1989, compiled a 20-17 match record, finishing in the top 20 on the ATP computer for the fifth consecutive year, ending at No. 18.
