Member of the Argentine Davis Cup team 1980-84. It was already a bad year when injury interceded in August, 1984. Clerc tore a stomach muscle the morning of his first round match in North Conway and did not play again until November. Until the injury, the usually consistant Clerc had been struggling a bit. Having won four Grand Prix titles the previous year, his only 1984 final came in Boston where he fell to Aaron Krickstein. As the likeable Jose-Luis was on the mend, the tennis world was suprised to learn that he and longtime coach Pato Rodriguez would go their separate ways.
Clerc, who won the ATP Sportsmanship Award in 1981, could earn such an accolade every year. In 1981, he won four Super Series titles in as many weeks, on the grueling summer clay segment in North America (Boston, Washington, North Conway and Indianapolis). Then, in 1983, he nearly duplicated that feat, winning three crowns in three weeks. In early 1986, Jose-Luis announced that he was retiring from fulltime play...Best Grand Slam result: SF at 1980/82 French Open...Qualified for Masters, 1981-84.
